The decline in schleich

In their glory days schleich was amazing , producing realistic and loved models. These models were a way for many equestrians to have horses especially for those who cannot afford to be around horses often or ever. However in the recent years it has become apparent that schleich don't care about how realistic their models are and only care about kids.

There are many different aspects Oland changes that make schleich less realistic

Such as:

Shading getting less realistic

Bodies being longer for better grip for children, this isn't confirmed but you can see a difference in body proportions f on old and new

And horses generally looking off

Now this could be because the sculptors and painters are different or lazy but it's most likely that they are aiming their product towards kids, supporting the narrative that 1:18 scale is only for kids.

Now don't get me wrong, I have seen many gorgeous customs on more recent horses and that's great but I'd personally much rather be able to buy a OF horse that does look realistic rather than create or go to a customiser.

Up ahead I will be showing some photos of comparisons.

Firstly we will be looking at the trakehners mare's progression or regression

Next is the change in the paint job, now this comparison is a bit difficult because the older horse is a grey so it doesn't do the shading justice

Next is the Arabian mare. schleich is turning their Arabians in to model cartoon horses!

Next look very closely at the facial structure of the Friesian mares

WIA models

So recently I ordered some WIA models from MPV  Quite a few actually 🫣 And they arrived in Scotland pretty quickly and were eventually out for delivery except the driver never found my house, took them 3 attempts until they eventually just put it in the post office, and now I need to pick them up.  I'm very excited as I've been a fan if WIA for ages and have never even held one in my hands  Tomorrow is the day I get them! Any guesses on which ones I got?

1:18 scale in the hobby -Spotted dreams studio

My name is Adah R., and am the person behind Spotted dreams studio . I’m a collector, customizer, blogger, photo shower, and judge. Silver Web Studios reached out to the OMHPS community and asked for guest bloggers, so I volunteered to write a post. :) Please note that in this post, when I refer to 1:18 scale, I am speaking of the general vague scales that surround the common rubber brands. They vary from 1:18-1:20. The model horse community as a whole seems to have discarded the 1:18th scale with their carpet herd. When a collector mentions the brand names Schleich, CollectA, Papo, Mojo, etc. the typical image is of an 8yr old holding a rubbed up rubber. Maybe we can picture a nice one in a show ring, but then we form a prejudice around cost. “Well, I paid $175 for my horse that I entered in that class. That rubber probably only cost about $10.” Maybe so. But some of my best horses have cost under $20, and I guarantee you’ve had a few too. Ever been surprised at how well a RR SM ...
